At a large online shopping mall in China, a store was found selling toner cartridges of member companies of JMBIA. The subsequent investigation confirmed that the store was run by a group based in Chengdu City that processed, stored, and sold toner cartridges of several member companies of JMBIA. In November 2017, the Shanghai City Office of Public Security was requested to take action, and the offending group’s offices and warehouses were all successfully seized and searched. 1,167 counterfeit toner cartridges, 110 container boxes, and 840 labels of 7 brands (Canon, Konica Minolta, Kyocera, Ricoh, Sharp, Fuji Xerox, Toshiba) were confiscated, and the principal offenders were detained in a prison. JBMIA also takes measures to expel Internet stores selling counterfeit products in its JBMIA Internet Store Expulsion Project, which utilizes rules controlling counterfeit products sold in online shopping malls. JBMIA also carries out exchanges of views between consumers and right holders on the one hand and organizers of online shopping malls on the other hand, from the standpoint of protection of each parties’ interests. After the offenders were exposed, the Office of Public Security seized information on the Internet store as evidence and performed investigations. All the obtained evidence was prepared and sent to the Procuratorate. As a result, when a request for expulsion of the store in question selling counterfeit products, based on the latest counterfeit product control rules derived from the above exchange of views, was made to the organizer of the online shopping mall in question as part of the JBMIA Internet Store Expulsion Project, this organizer agreed to the request. Thus, the store in question was successfully expelled. Through the above activities, JBMIA strives to completely expel counterfeit products, by confiscation and destruction of counterfeit products, eliminating Internet stores, and prosecuting offenders.
